The Minister of the Environment Carole Dieschbourg, who was heading the Luxembourgish delegation, participated in the triple conference of the parties (COP) of the Basel convention on the 4th and 5th of May 2017. This event of the Basel convention focused on the control of the transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal, of the Rotterdam convention including the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides in the international trade and of the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
Several substances were added to the list of POPs of the Stockholm convention: short chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenylether (c-decaDBE) and polymer and rubber manufacturing intermediate hexachlorobutanediene.
In parallel, the acaricide trichlorfon, the insecticidecarbofuran and short chain chlorinated paraffins have been added to the list of substances for which prior consent is required in the context of international trade in accordance with the provisions of the Rotterdam Protocol.
